Big Girl, Little Chef

Well, I decided recently to go ahead and buy a potty chair, sit it in Mackenzie's bathroom & try to get her to sit on it each night while we let the water run in her tub. Not that I have high hopes of potty training anytime soon (for those who laughed when they read the first line considering I have a 16 month old). But, from what little I know/can tell about potty training - it takes a while, so I figure, I'll start way early just trying to get her familiar with the seat, willing to sit on it, etc. Get the process started sooner, maybe finish sooner?

ANyways, I got the chair and set it up yesterday. My plan is to just have her try and sit on it while I run her bath each night. If/when something happens, praise her like crazy. Maybe it will increase in how many times it happens? So, I sat her on it last night & asked her if she needed to tee-tee. She didn't say much and got up fairly quickly and walked to other end of the bathtub. She then squatted to play with some washcloths on the floor and I noticed her going potty. Coincidence? Maybe. For a long time now, many months, she RARELY tinkles while waiting for the bath while in the nude, but I tried not to think too much about it and cleaned it up and moved on to the bath.

After the bath, I sat her on the potty again & asked her she needed to go potty. She managed to let out two little toots, and I cheered. I figure, it's similar muscles, right? Thought I might have heard some tee-tee, so I got her off and looked. Nothing. But then I turned around & she had tee-tee'd on the floor AGAIN. Now, I'm thinking not a coincidence. I'm thinking maybe she understands that I want her to go, but doesn't quite get that it needs to happen on the potty. Or maybe she's scared/doesn't want to go on the seat.

I'm encouraged. I'm going to keep this up and see where it leads. I'll probably be cleaning up a lot of accidents at bathtime, but hey, she's about to be bathed & it's on the tile floor. I think she has some concept of having control of it. Maybe? Don't laugh too hard if you're an
experienced mom! I'm hopeful. We'll take it easy like this til summer, but I'm going hard core in the summer to have her potty-trained by 2. (Not sure I should post that b/c I may have to eat my typed words.....)

In other news, her new kitchen from Meemi & Popeye for Christmas, has been put together. She has some room to grow in imaginative play with it, as she tires of it quickly when I'm not around. But when I'm there, she loves to "wash her hands" in the sink!

I think it's wonderful idea.

Nothing to lose if you are willing to take the occassional puddle.

Good luck! After having done 2 boys I'm hoping K is easier. I will say there was a HUGE difference in the two boys. We did Ryan at 2 1/2 because WE were tired of buying diapers for 2 not because he was showing any signs of being ready. We TRIED to do Pace at 2 1/2 b/c I didn't want to buy diapers for 2 (K was on the way) AND b/c he was showing some signs. Pace was adamant that he wouldn't go until he was 3. And he didn't. On his 3rd Birthday he was trained. Not because we did anything but because he said he would at 3! Ryan was trained in a weekend by us not doing anything but potty bootcamp.

I say go for it if you can! One thing I heard was to reward for being dry vs going in the potty, since the goal is to stay dry. Not sure how you would get her to understand that being so young. I can send K down if you want to do 2 at a time? :)

You can read up on lots of Elimination control ... I think that's what they call it moms who have their little ones Potty trained early in life. I'm pretty sure they call it EC or something like that. It shouldn't be too hard to google.
